KIRKWALL, UK — Orkney Island Council’s Development and Infrastructure Committee in the far north of Scotland is supporting offshore plans for the proposed West of Orkney wind farm.

The development location is 30 km west of mainland Orkney and 25 km north of the Sutherland coast.

The plans, outlined in an offshore consent application submitted to Scottish Ministers last October, explains how the wind farm will be constructed and the location of the turbines and cable routes, and it also includes environmental assessments based on survey data compiled over two and a half years.

Scottish Ministers will take a final decision following recommendations by the Marine Directorate Licensing Operations Team and comments issued by statutory consultees, including Orkney Islands Council.

A joint venture (JV) between Corio Generation, TotalEnergies and Renewable Infrastructure Development Group is working on the 2-GW project, which would feature up to 125 turbines on fixed foundations. They are targeting first power in 2029.

The JV has further plans to support development of a supply chain and associated business opportunities in Caithness, Sutherland and Orkney, the rest of Scotland and parts of the UK.
