LEIDSCHENDAM, the Netherlands — Renexia has contracted Fugro for a survey over the location for the proposed Med Wind floating wind farm in the Strait of Sicily, southern Italy.
This will be one of the largest offshore wind projects planned in the Mediterranean Sea, with 190 floating turbines providing an installed capacity of 2.8 GW.
Fugro will perform marine geophysical and environmental surveys over the Med Wind site and along the two proposed export cable corridors.
After acquiring the geodata over water depths of 300 m to 900 m, results of the analysis will support geohazard risk mitigation and identification of a safe route for installation of the two export cables.
The analysis will also inform the final integrated environmental impact assessment (EIA) application to Italy’s Ministry of Energy Transition.
The planned 850-sq-km wind farm, 60 km off the Italian coast, should provide sufficient power for 3.4 million homes per year.
