ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands – Renexia SpA, a subsidiary of Toto Holding, has contracted Van Oord to transport and install 10 foundations and turbines at the Taranto wind farm offshore Italy.

Van Oord’s installation vessel MPI Resolution has set sail to Italy to install the monopiles, secondary steel, and the turbines at the country’s first offshore wind farm.

Taranto is the first offshore wind farm in the Mediterranean Sea. It will be located near the Taranto harbor, have a capacity of 30 MW, and estimated output of 58,000 MWh per year.

According to Van Oord, the MPI Resolution has a variety of equipment on board including a Menck hammer, sea fastening, upend tool and lifting equipment. The vessel is suited for the works in the Mediterranean Sea because it can handle both the very shallow and deeper water locations as water depths vary from 4 to 18 m (13 to 59 ft).

During the pile driving activities, the company will deploy its FaunaGuard system, an acoustic device that safely and temporarily deters dolphins by using special underwater acoustics.

Mingyang Smart Energy is providing the wind turbines.
