SANDNES, NorwayHorisont Energi has awarded Saipem and Technip Energies studies for the full conceptual design of the Barents Blue carbon-neutral ammonia complex in Hammerfest, northern Norway.

According to Horisont, this will be Europe’s first large-scale complex of blue ammonia produced from natural gas, based on Haldor Topsøe’s SynCOR syngas and ammonia technology. Saipem and Technip Energies have both constructed ammonia plants featuring this process.

CO2 captured during the production process is transported offshore for injection into a large geological reservoir beneath the seabed.

The proposed plant could offer a market outlet for large volumes of the natural gas that has been discovered in the Barents Sea.

Ammonia is currently the world’s second-most used industrial gas, Horisont said, with an established infrastructure for shipping worldwide. In future, it also looks set to be used as a climate-neutral fuel, especially by the maritime industry.

The two competing studies will attempt to find the most innovative solutions and fully develop the modularized/winterized process and utilities design.

Results will support the FEED and subsequent development of the Barents Blue project, with construction planned to take place between 2023 and 2025.
