STAVANGER, Norway – Equinor and RWE have joined the NortH2 project, which targets production of green hydrogen using renewable electricity from offshore wind in the Dutch North Sea.
Existing partners in the project, which launched in February, are Shell, Groningen Seaports, Gasunie and the province of Groningen.
They aim to complete a feasibility study by 2021, and to initiate development activities in the second half of next year.
The projected capacity is 1 GW in 2027, 4 GW by 2030, and 10 GW+ by 2040 for electrolysis – sufficient for 0.4 MM metric tons (0.44 MM tons) of green hydrogen production in 2030 and 1 MM metric tons (1.1 MM tons) by 2040.
Equinor sees the development as complimentary to other schemes it is involved in off Norway and the UK, such as Northern Lights (CCS) and H2H Saltend (blue hydrogen).
The parallel development of the hydrogen infrastructure will involve repurposing of existing natural gas infrastructure.
