LONDON – Britain’s Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) is making available more than 50 years of North Sea data through its National Data Repository (NDR).

The new data should help E&P companies with exploration, production efficiency and programs working toward net zero, notably identification of potential sites for carbon storage.

Previously this data was costly and time-consuming to access.

The NDR was first opened as an online platform in 2019, with 100 terabytes of well, geophysical, and other petroleum license data. Now it has been transferred to the OGA’s cloud-based Digital Energy Platform, a further 400TB will be uploaded over the next few months.

According to the Authority, the service is used by more than 100 energy companies to report data in compliance with Britain’s Energy Act 2016 and Petroleum Act 1998.

Data reported to the platform will be aligned with common standards, saving users the cost and time of reformatting, with the information said to be interpretation-ready and easily analyzed.

Cloud-based technology removes the need for physical storage so that users can visualize data of interest before downloading what they need.

The NDR can be accessed free of charge, with certain conditions, at https://ndr.ogauthority.co.uk/.
