LONDON – Six thousand subscribers have downloaded more than 340 terabytes of data from the Oil & Gas Authority’s National Data Repository, since its launch one year ago.

The release - at https://ndr.ogauthority.co.uk - included details on more than of the UK’s 12,500 wellbores, 5,000 seismic surveys, and 3,000 pipelines. More information has been added since, with a 9% increase in available well data.

Just over half of all users are from the UK, followed by the US (9.4%) and Norway (5.4%), and others from more than 100 countries, including one from the Falkland Islands.

Collectively they have ordered more than 24 terabytes, around 20 times the volume accessed prior to the launch of the repository.

According to the OGA, it is already proving to be an important tool in maximizing economic recovery of the UK’s offshore reserves as the easy availability of data is helping companies take better decisions in exploration and investment.

Some of the information can also be reassessed to help determine whether a particular offshore site may be suitable for carbon storage, the OGA added.

Later this year the OGA plans to further improvements to the service, allowing it to support new types of information such as seismic field data and users to download large quantities of data more quickly.

Another goal is to provide input to emerging analysis and technologies that will support the future roles of geoscience and engineering.

The present intention is to keep improving the platform so that the repository is embedded within the OGA’s Digital Energy Platform in line with its digital strategy.
