LONDON, UK --A feasibility study by Star Energy Group suggests the disused Edmond and Gordon fields in the UK North Sea could form the basis of a 145 bcf offshore storage facility.

According to Star's partner in the project, Encore Oil, conceptual design work by Amec for the study confirmed a probable capital outlay of £1.15 bn ($2.36 bn). This would cover the cost of two offshore platforms with compression equipment, a 200 km (124 mi) 42-in. (106.7 cm) pipeline, and a terminal at Bacton on the English east coast capable of handling compression and gas processing.

The project's next stage will be the drilling of an appraisal well on Esmond during the first half of 2008, which Star will finance.

If results are satisfactory, the partners would sanction development of what they claim would be the UK's largest gas storage facility.
