ABERDEEN, UK – More oil companies have issued details of licenses newly awarded under the second tranche of the UK’s 26th Seaward Licensing Round.

Hurricane Exploration gained a 100% operating interest in a frontier license covering 10 offshore blocks southwest of the Shetland Isles and northwest of the Orkney Islands.

The acreage covers a large part of the Devonian Orcadian basin, which Hurricane believes could be strongly prospective despite being largely overlooked. There is also potential in the underlying basement, which has delivered discoveries for Hurricane in this region over the past two years.

The company plans to acquire 2D seismic over the license to provide insight into the subsurface geology of this part of the basin.

Dana Petroleum, in a 50/50 partnership with Sorgenia E&P (UK), gained operatorship of blocks 42/27, 47/2b (split), and 47/3g (split) in the UK southern North Sea.

Work obligations include reprocessing of 3D seismic. The blocks are adjacent to the recent Tolmount gas discovery in which Dana has a 50% interest.

Dana’s UK Managing Director Paul Griffin said the blocks were “in an area that is well known to us and includes our potential Platypus and Tolmount developments. Our drilling program for 2012 will include six exploration wells in the North Sea and west of Shetland as we seek to further enhance our strong reserves position.”
