HOUSTON -- It is possible to upgrade a multi-service vessel with surface BOP technology to conduct slimhole completions and, ultimately, even to drill wells, said Colin Johnston with Helix Energy Solutions Group at the 2008 DOT conference.

According to Johnston, their Q4000 is a column stabilized semisubmersible unit currently applied to subsea construction and subsea well operations in the form of through tubing intervention and well decommissioning. However, upgrades have resulted in the surface BOP operations are an extension of existing high pressure riser based intervention operations of which more than 40 have been conducted, said Johnston.
