Africa Energy, via its investment in Main Street 1549, has submitted a new environmental authorization (EA) application for development of the Brulpadda and Luiperd gas-condensate discoveries in Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa, advancing efforts to commercialize one of the country's most significant offshore gas resources.

The company withdrew a previous EA application submitted in February 2025 and has filed the new submission with the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA) in support of its ongoing Production Right application.

Under the new EA application, the company has issued a draft scoping report for public review and comment.

Two development pathways under review

The Brulpadda (discovered in 2019) and Luiperd (discovered in 2020) finds are among the largest offshore gas discoveries made off South Africa and have long been viewed as a potential catalyst for the country's domestic gas industry.

Main Street has chosen to assess two optional full-field development scenarios for the deepwater Brulpadda and Luiperd discoveries in the block, formerly operated by TotalEnergies.

The concepts include transporting produced gas to shore via pipeline or processing the gas offshore into LNG for export and regional markets.

The final development concept will depend on factors including future regional gas demand and market conditions.

Once Main Street, which currently holds a 10% interest in the block, completes the public consultation process, it will submit a final scoping report to PASA for approval.

If approved, Main Street will proceed to the impact assessment phase, starting with preparation of the draft environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) report, the approval of which is required for granting of the production right.

Subject to regulatory approvals by the South African authorities concerning the withdrawal of the other partners in Block 11B/12B, and completion of the restructuring of Main Street, the company would hold a 75% interest.
