STAVANGER, NorwayDigital solutions are benefitting all aspects of operations at the Johan Sverdrup project in the Norwegian North Sea, according to operator Equinor.

One year after the field came onstream, the associated benefits have included:

  • Higher levels of stable production by means of automated production optimization
  • Improved accuracy in the subsurface due to broader and more complex data sets, providing more detailed information about the reservoir
  • More efficient operations and maintenance thanks to solutions for the digital field worker, under which operators use tablets in their daily work, and the digital twin, which is a virtual copy of the platform.

The innovations have boosted Equinor’s earnings by around NOK2 billion ($216 million).

Collaboration with the integrated operations center onshore also helps optimize production and de-bottleneck processes, Equinor added, cutting unscheduled downtime, and improving maintenance and energy consumption.

Other digital initiatives under trial at Sverdrup are the use of robots above and below water, machine learning, and 3D printing technology.
