MUTTENZ, SwitzerlandClariant has upgraded its production chemical supply service contract for the Johan Sverdrup field complex in the Norwegian North Sea, working with operator Equinor to optimize the volume of oxygen scavenger employed.

“As part of our optimization process our team took the existing O2 remover being used – [a] liquid grade sulphite-based oxygen scavenger – and looked at how we could make it a more efficient product, formulating a catalyzed version,” said Jarle Skjold, global corporate account Manager at Clariant Oil Services.

During field trials, the teams were able to reduce the volume of O2 remover used. The replacement product should deliver annual cost savings of around $800,000 at the field center, the company claims, along with reduced chemical and energy use, and production and shipping efficiencies.

Clariant was awarded the production chemical supply contract in 2017.
