ABERDEEN, UKMaritime Developments (MDL) has supported Saipem with the pipelay for an LNG import project offshore Greece.

This comprises a moored FSRU and subsea pipeline system, connecting the vessel to Greece’s National Natural Gas Transmission System.

MDL deployed a flex-lay spread to support Saipem’s installation of two flexible risers and a dynamic control umbilical, connecting to a pipeline end manifold (PLEM) at the FSRU.

Subsea pipelines then connect the PLEM back to the coastal valve station onshore.

The equipment spread comprised a horizontal lay system, a TTS-4/180 Series tensioner and an adjustable deck deflector, integrated with Saipem’s equipment on board the Island Victory.

The horizontal lay system enabled installation of 27 buoyancy modules. According to MDL, it provided a wide work platform, a large height clearance between the platform and the outboard chute, and various handling aids for feeding of the buoyancy module halves into the firing line.

For product handling, the tensioner provided a longer track contact length and upgraded squeeze circuit compared to similar equipment available on the spot market. These features, MDL said, extend the window of product diameters and co-efficient of friction that the tensioner can safely handle while maintaining secure grip and deployment or retrieval.
