EAST KILBRIDE, UK – Flow measurement specialist NEL has developed a technique for improving the accuracy of differential pressure meters for high viscosity.

Differential pressure meters account for around 40% of all flow meters in use worldwide, NEL says. However, they were not designed to cope with heavy oil and are said to be prone to inaccurate measurements inheavy-oil applications.

The new technique, based on differential pressure technology, is said to avoid current performance errors by providing a corrected discharge coefficient in real time.

In addition, it provides a measurement of the density and viscosity of the fluid, both critical for calculating mass or volume flow and pipeline entry criteria.

Potentially this could dispense with the requirement (and associated costs) for sampling systems, inline densitometers, and inline viscometers.
