SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy – Gaz-System has awarded Saipem a Eur280-million ($306.5-million) contract for the Baltic Pipe project in the Baltic Sea.

This involves transportation and installation of a gas pipeline between Denmark and Poland.

Gaz-System S.A. and Energinet are managing the project, which is co-financed by the European Union and which will supply gas from Norway to Poland, Denmark and neighboring countries.

Saipem will lay around 275 km (171 mi) of 36-in. concrete-coated pipes via the S-lay method, in water depths of 4-57 m (13-187 ft).

The program, which is under way, will involve:

  • Construction of two micro-tunnels at the Danish and Polish shorelines to protect beaches, cliffs, and other features of the natural environment
  • Pre-lay route surveys, during the second half of 2020
  • Transport of pipes from the marshalling yard to pipelay vessels for jointing, lowering to the seafloor, installation and stabilization during 2021
  • Other works to protect both the pipeline and its crossings with other subsea infrastructure
  • Connecting the offshore pipeline with Baltic Pipe’s onshore sections in Poland and Denmark,
  • Conducting tests, supporting offshore commissioning and checking the pipeline’s functioning as part of the overall Baltic Pipe infrastructure.

The target for handover of the pipeline for operation is currently October 2022.
