MONGSTAD/GULEN, NorwayPSW Group has signed an agreement to operate the former EMAS spoolbase in Gulen Industrial Harbor, western Norway.

The agreement covers all activities related to production and spooling of offshore pipelines. The company will rename the facility, constructed in 2014, PSW Spoolbase.

Its location is close to some of the largest subsea fields in the North Sea. The spoolbase was constructed in 2014 to optimize logistics and pipe handling.

The 3,700-sq m (39,826-sq ft) fabrication facility includes an indoor tie-in area, and is said to hold a world record of 125 welds in one day.

Oddbjørn Haukøy, CEO pf PSW Group, said: “We’re seeing a shift from major developments to satellite and tieback projects on the Norwegian and British continental shelf. There is a market analysis which shows expectations of strong growth in the future, with an estimated value of $5 billion on the [two] continental shelves.”

PSW Group will now operate an area of more than 120,000 sq m (1.29 million sq ft) in Gulen including a rig quay, sail-in dock and spoolbase, with infrastructure and logistics to support a wide range of activities.

Haukøy added: “We are already in dialogue with global companies who are investigating the possibility of using PSW Spoolbase versus new establishments in other regions.”

Another goal is to further develop the complex to provide spooling and logistics for offshore power cables for offshore wind projects.

Wergeland Gruppen is the company’s partner for the sail-in and dry-dock projects currently under construction, and the supplier of base activities in the area.
