Man dies aboard Byford Dolphin

A 44 year-old man lost his life in a working accident yesterday onboard the Byford Dolphin drilling rig in the North Sea. The accident happened when a piece of pipe fell.

The injured man was brought to Stavanger, Norway, by helicopter, but his life could not be saved. The Byford Dolphin was working on the Sigyn field in the North Sea when the accident occurred. Statoil launched an internal committee of inquiry to investigate the cause of the accident. Officials from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the Norwegian police, Statoil, Esso, and Dolphin traveled to Byford Dolphin yesterday evening. Esso operates the field and Statoil is carrying out drilling services for Esso.
