Improved separation of produced water

Hydroflokk is a newly developed process system for pre-treatment of produced water offshore to optimize its separability. The larger the oil droplets in the produced water, the easier they are separated (Stokes' law). In the Hydroflokk system, the oil droplets are subjected to accelerated coalescence and the formation of larger, more separable flows by means of combined chemical and mechanical action. The use of Hydroflokk together with high efficiency Alfa Laval disc-stack centrifuges for hydrocyclone reject can assure compliance with future, stricter environmental demands.

The Hydroflokk system employs a proven technology, carefully optimized mechanical agitation and improved chemical utilization. Benefits include increased separation efficiency, reduction of chemical dosages to a few ppm, and use of specially selected environmentally acceptable chemicals.

Chirag living quarters delivered

Emtunga, a leading designer and fabricator of offshore living quarters and modules, completed an important contract in 1997 for the Chirag I development in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea. This was Emtunga's first contract in this sector which it sees as an important future market for its modules. The company's production facilities have been organized specifically to handle this type of modular construction with the utmost efficiency, enabling it to achieve a reduction in man-hours of around 45%. To date, Emtunga has designed and fabricated more than 6,500 beds worldwide. The living quarters are designed and fabricated in steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. Recently, the company also started a development program for modules in composite material.

Isostatic processing in high grade steels

Bodycote Powdermet has won major challenging projects from the offshore industry in recent years. The company operates the world's largest hot isostatic processing (HIP) facility. Applications are mainly directed at pressure vessel items, primarily in high strength stainless steel such as ferritic 12% Cr, 6Mo austenitic, and 22-25% Cr duplex ferritic/ austenitic grades with excellent corrosion resistance. Products have been made in sizes weighing up to 12 tons. Since the PM HIP method has isotropic features, the mechanical properties are equal in all directions of the component. Weight savings of up to 40% have been achieved. HIP is a viable alternative to conventional forgings or castings, giving the customer shorter delivery time, design flexibility, low series economy, and possibilities to combine different material grades in the same part.

Floating production design, engineering

GVA Consultants specializes in the design and engineering of offshore floaters and ships. It has an extensive background in floating production vessels. Among these is the purpose-designed FPU GVA 4500 Petrobras XVIII, onstream since June 1994. Currently, the company is engaged in the design of two Umoe/GVA 8000 floaters for Norsk Hydro's Visund and Troll C developments plus the Kvaerner GVA 70 floater for Statoil's Åsgard B gas center. GVA 4500 and GVA 5800 are among the drilling rig designs offered for deepwater operation, with dynamic positioning as an option. Other areas of expertise include conversions, monohulls, and turrets.

Cost-effective gas turbine cleaning

Gas Turbine Efficiency has developed the first cleaning concept for gas turbines using the same nozzle installation for both on- and off-line cleaning, thus drastically reducing the installation and hardware cost. It is designed for use on every type of gas turbine, installation or application - small or big, new installation or retrofit - where space available is limited. The concept saves water, space, and weight, and has been subjected to extensive on-site and test cell tests, thereby offering the most cost-effective cleaning program available today. The method has been developed in accordance with current and upcoming environmental regulations, and specifies the use of environmentally documented fluids.

Hydraulic drives for tough environments

Hagglunds Drives has more than 30 years experience in the marine business. In the early 1970s the company needed a motor for its cargo handling crane. The solution was a hydraulic motor named Viking. Today, the Viking and the new Compact motors are installed widely in winches, cranes, unloaders, and pipelayers, and are used in slewing applications and as propulsion in paddle wheelers. The high efficiency and low inertia of Hagglunds' motors, combined with their compact design, has made them popular in the offshore and marine industries.

Efficient air intake and acoustic systems

Reliability of gas turbines, compressors and engines depends on clean filtered air for the systems to perform to expectations during long periods of operation. With 25 years' experience of supplying air intake and acoustic systems to North Sea installations, Industrifilter combines high efficiency with low pressure drop for maximum energy efficiency. Industrifilter has also been a forerunner in the use of aluminum for gas turbine packages, where the first application, on Saga's Snorre project, is now 10 years old. Recent projects are Njord, Visund, Troll C, and Oseberg South for Norsk Hydro, Conoco's Banff FPSO, and Esso's Jotun.

Wide range of titanium products

Permascand delivers customized titanium products to the offshore industry, where corrosion resistance and light weight are crucial. Titanium pipe spools for deluge systems have been delivered recently for the Jotun and Njord projects. They are safe, and require no maintenance. Other specialties of the company include pressure vessels and tubular heat exchangers. Permascand also offers a patented nitride hardening of titanium surfaces. The titanium nitride dramatically increases service life in erosive and corrosive environments. Nitrided titanium pistons, used in hydraulic systems, have been installed at the Saga Snorre TLP. The titanium nitride layer has shown unique adhesive and strength properties, leading to considerable cost benefits for the operator.

Heavy lifts for Diana Spar

Rigging Management Systems (RMS) is currently working for Aker Mantyluoto in Finland in a contract that involves assembling 21 steel spar hull sections weighing up to 2,000 tons each for the Diana project. Each section of the spar is fabricated in two parts, since the 37.2-meter hull diameter is too wide to be fabricated in complete sections under one roof. Once completed, the two parts are taken outside for mating by RMS. The smaller top sections, weighing up to 1,100 tons each, are raised 25 meters in an operation that takes 4 hours, and to tolerances of +/-20 mm. Once the upper section is in position, the lower section is skidded underneath and the two joined together. The complete unit is then connected to the other completed sections. When finished, the hull length will measure 215 meters and weigh over 25,000 tons. The 21 single lifts are scheduled to take place every third week during a 15-month period.
