Sea Lion partners advance second FPSO plan as development targets 180,000 bbl/d

Rockhopper Exploration has acquired a 35% interest in the OSX-1 FPSO, earmarked for a future phase of the Sea Lion field development, while partners continue progressing the project despite renewed sanctions threats from Argentina.

Why this news matters:

  • The acquisition gives Rockhopper direct ownership in infrastructure planned for the next phase of the Sea Lion development, supporting long-term production growth.

  • Sea Lion remains one of the largest undeveloped offshore oil projects in the Falkland Islands, with production targets potentially reaching about 180,000 bbl/d.

  • The project continues to move forward despite political opposition from Argentina and the withdrawal of two major service contractors.

Rockhopper expects drilling to start as planned in early 2027, the company reported in its first-half 2026 results report.

The second FPSO could increase total production to around 180,000 bbl/d; the present plan is to take FID on the central development area in first-half 2028, potentially leading to first oil in 2030.
