Perenco Brazil has signed a letter of intent with Porto do Açu to develop what the companies describe as the first offshore platform electrification project in the Campos Basin, connecting shallow-water production facilities to shore-based electricity through an 80-km subsea cable.
The port complex will set aside an area for construction of Perenco’s onshore power grid connection, and the right-of-way for the cable.
Perenco said its main goal was to reduce carbon Scope 1 emissions from its operations in Brazil. At present, the Pargo/Cherne Clusters platforms depend on power generated locally by turbogenerators.
The system should be operational by early 2028, initially delivering 35 MW, and potentially rising to 60 MW within four years.
Since 2024, Vast Infraestrutura, in partnership with Wilson Sons, has provided shore power to tugboats and support vessels berthed at Terminal 1 at Porto do Açu.
The Pargo Cluster comprises the Pargo, Carapeba and Vermelho fields with eight fixed platforms in up to 100 m of water. After acquiring the fields from Petrobras in October 2019, Brazil’s authorities approved Perenco’s Pargo Cluster Development Plan in 2021.
Current production is about 20,000 bbl/d. The company also operates the Cherne and Bagre concessions.
