Aker BP, partners overcome complex carbonate drilling challenges on North Sea Symra development

Aker BP says a combination of controlled mud level technology, wired drillpipe and specialized cement systems helped drilling teams manage severe fluid losses while developing the Symra subsea tieback offshore Norway.

Why this news matters:

  • The project demonstrates how operators can develop complex carbonate reservoirs through existing North Sea infrastructure, extending the value of established production hubs.

  • Lessons learned at Symra could help reduce drilling risk and improve well delivery in future Zechstein carbonate developments offshore Norway.
