Equinor evaluates tieback of Barents Sea oil find to Johan Castberg infrastructure

Equinor has made a small but potentially commercial oil find close to the Johan Castberg infrastructure in the Barents Sea.

The Skrugard North Tubåen prospect appears to contain 7.6 MMboe to 10.5 MMboe recoverable, based on initial analysis.

The discovery lies close to the Johan Castberg development, which recently entered production in the Barents Sea. Its proximity to existing infrastructure could improve the commercial viability of the find by reducing the need for standalone facilities.

Johan Castberg started production last year and was designed as a hub for future discoveries in the Barents Sea, allowing nearby resources to potentially be commercialized through tiebacks.

The Transocean Enabler semisubmersible rig drilled well 7220/5-EC-2 H in 361 m of water in PL 532, 6 km north of the 7220/8-1 discovery well on the Johan Castberg Field.

Equinor and the license partners Vår Energi and Petoro are determining the feasibility of a tie-in, according to the Norwegian Offshore Directorate.

The well penetrated a 30-m oil column in sandstone in the Tubåen Formation in good-quality Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks before being terminated in the Fruholmen Formation in the Upper Triassic. 

It will be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Key takeaway:

While modest in size, the discovery's location near Johan Castberg could allow Equinor and its partners to pursue a lower-cost tieback development leveraging existing infrastructure.
