MOSCOW – PAO NOVATEK subsidiary OOO Arctic LNG 3 has started drilling the first well on the North-Obskiy license area in the shallow waters of Ob Bay offshore northern Russia.

The jackupAmazon leased from Gazpromflot is drilling the well: to ensure zero discharge, all drilling waste will be collected and transported 125 km (78 mi) to the Sabetta onshore base.

Novatek chairman Leonid Mikhelson said the license area offers significant geological potential and a favorable location in terms of logistics.

It is close to the exit from Ob Bay in its northern part, facilitating the passage of vessels with no need for an approach channel.

The drilling program is part of the company’s strategy to increase LNG production in the Russian Arctic region.
