NEW ORLEANS -- A record number of drilling rigs currently are working in the ultra deepwater Gulf of Mexico, according to the MMS.
"For the first time, 15 rigs are drilling for oil and gas in 5,000 ft (1,524 m) of water or greater in the Gulf," says Randall Luthi, MMS director. "The continued increase in drilling activity is a show of confidence in the resource potential of the region's ultra deepwater frontier."
