OSLO, Norway – Statoil Petroleum has discovered oil via an exploration well between the Vigdis and Snorre fields in the Norwegian North Sea. However, the find may not be commercially viable, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

The semisubmersibleBideford Dolphin drilled well 34/7-H-2 H from a subsea template on the northeastern part of Vigdis, in 292 m (958 ft) of water.

It proved a 24-m (79-ft) oil column in the targeted Lower Jurassic Cook formation, but with lower reservoir quality than expected.

The well will be plugged back and side tracked toVigdis North East as a water injector.
