STAVANGER, Norway – The semisub Transocean Norge has spud the Velocette exploration well in the northern Norwegian Sea for operator OMV Norge.

Velocette is a gas-condensate prospect in production license 1016, which is about 45 km from the Equinor-operated Aasta Hansteen gas-condensate field and in 465 m of water. Drilling could continue for up to 61 days in the event of a discovery.

OMV has appointed Sandnessjøen for supply base services and Brønnøysund for helicopter transport service to support the well.

According to Longboat Energy, which has a 20% stake in the license via the Longboat JAPEX Norge venture, the well is targeting Cretaceous Nise turbidite sands on the eastern flank of the Utgard High.

Seismic amplitude anomalies on the Velocette structure could represent gas-filled sands, with potential for up to 177 MMboe.

There are various follow-on opportunities elsewhere in the license with potential aggregate resources of ~200 MMboe that could be de-risked by a discovery.

INPEX Idemitsu Norge is the other partner.
