NEW YORK – ExxonMobil has discovered more oil in the deepwater Stabroek block offshore Guyana, according to partner Hess.

The Hassa-1 well, drilled by the drillship Noble Don Taylor, encountered around 50 ft (15.2 m) of oil-bearing reservoir in deeper geologic intervals, but no oil in the primary target areas.

Data from the well will be incorporated into future exploration and development planning.

The Noble Don Taylor has since started development drilling for the Liza Phase 2 project, with sister drillships Noble Bob Douglas and Noble Tom Madden also drilling and completing wells for the same development.

Another drillship, Stena Carron, completed appraisal work at the Redtail-1 well before moving to the Canje block offshore Guyana.

Following commissioning of the natural gas injection system the Phase 1 FPSO Liza Destiny attained its nameplate capacity of 120,000 b/d of oil in December.

Hess expects Phase 2, using the FPSO Liza Unity (220,000 b/d) to achieve first oil, with the Payara development, the third project on the Stabroek block, targeting first oil in 2024.
