LONDON -- Gulfsands Petroleum Plc has appointed Richard Malcolm as CEO, effective during 4Q 2008.

Previously, Malcolm, a petroleum geologist, was the managing director of OMV (UK) Ltd., where he spent nine years developing OMV's assets predominantly in the North Sea, Libya, Australia, and New Zealand.

Malcolm has spent 29 years in the oil industry, beginning in 1980 as a petroleum geologist for Woodside Offshore Petroleum. Following Woodside, Malcolm worked at Ampolex Ltd., and Mobil, following Mobil's takeover of Ampolex in 1997.

"The Board welcomes [Malcolm] at a crucial moment in the evolution of Gulfsands Petroleum, just as we are about to commence commercial production in Syria. His appointment means that we now have a complete and eminently qualified senior management team to drive Gulfsands to the next stage of its development," says Andrew West, chairman.
