Projection technology improves operations management on Troll A
CGM’s close large overview (CLOV) projection technology and control room layout and furniture are helping to improve ergonomic standards in offshore industry control rooms.
ABB has incorporated both CLOV and operator desks in a new control room it is delivering to Statoil for the Troll A Compression project. The room, which was being mounted recently at ABB’s Bergen facility, will be installed on the Troll A platform later in the year.
The CLOV technology, which CGM developed with partner 3D Perception, simplifies round-the-clock control room operations through the inclusion of a large domed screen on which several of the operators’ monitor screens can be presented in a seamless fashion. The system has been developed to aid rapid response to critical situations, according to CGM’s managing director Pierre Schäring. If an alarm sounds in one area, the image from the relevant CCTV camera is automatically presented without the operators having to search through a bank of CCTV images to find the right one.
CGM also offers the Cergo range of control room furniture. Here the main product is an ergonomic operator desk, the height of which can be adjusted by means of motorized pillars that have been specially developed for tough environments. The modular design ensures easy adaptability to individual need.
Norway’s Institute for Energy Technology has endorsed the CLOV system. Among other benefits, it gives operators a clear overview of the process, and according to CGM, it also allows the operator to supervise and control a larger part of the process than with alternative systems. Having no back projection, its small footprint enables it to be fitted easily in existing control rooms.
CGM’s technology package provides a good platform for integrating several control rooms into one, thus providing for more efficient control operations at the hands of fewer operators. The technology is also relevant to e-operations in the offshore industry, the trend being for increased exercise of the control function from land. ABB has incorporated the technology into the display of its state-of-the-art System 800xA automation process, which has been on view at several exhibitions round the world.•
