Veolia Water Technologies and SBM Offshore have agreed to cooperate on development of freshwater floating production units (FPUs).

Under their memorandum of understanding, they plan to equip the platforms with reverse osmosis desalination technology to address global water shortages.

Targeted sectors include:

  • Municipal water systems in coastal areas experiencing rising demand and supply disruptions;
  • Mining industries in water-scarce regions aiming to reduce the environmental impact of their operations; and
  • Heavy industries seeking reliable freshwater supplies to help them adapt to lower-carbon operations.

Veolia/SBM will design the floating desalination units/FPUs to generate up to 100,000 cu m/d of fresh water. Another perceived attraction is swift deployments with more reliable delivery timelines compared to onshore construction.

They also plan to offer designs scaled to match clients’ evolving requirements.
