Franklin Offshore subsidiary CFE Engineers Asia has completed fabrication and load-out of 12 suction piles for Chevron’s $4 billion Jansz-lo compression project offshore Western Australia.
An aerial shot highlights CFE Engineer's first six suction piles secured for mobilization on a barge.
What are suction piles?
Suction piles have been used effectively as mooring anchors and foundations since the 1990s. Suction piles (also called suction caissons or suction anchors) are a long steel cylinder topped with a pile top or cap. The cap comprises valves to assist with embedment as well as connections that differ depending on the use of the pile.
Hanwha Ocean (ex-Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) commissioned the mooring piles after securing a $545 million construction contract from Chevron in early 2022 for the project’s field control station for the Jansz-Io compression project.
The suction piles, weighing almost 4,500 metric tons in total, were manufactured in Singapore and lifted using Franklin Offshore's NEXUS synthetic sling system.
