ABERDEEN, UK -- The UK’s industry technology facilitator ITF has given Green Ocean Energy funds to develop its Wave Treader technology for the oil and gas industry.
The company will use this support to investigate adaptation of its wave energy generator to power offshore structures.
Under a six-month project, Green Ocean will examine the device’s potential to provide sustainable electricity to unmanned platforms and offshore installations facing decommissioning. Further funding has come from GDF Suez, Tata Steel, and Bosch Rexroth.
Graeme Bell, CEO of Green Ocean Energy, said: “Remote manned and unmanned offshore platforms currently rely on diesel generators for electricity. These incur fuel and maintenance costs, additional vessel activity, and health and safety issues as well as contamination and pollution risks. There is great potential for our wave energy project to revolutionize how the oil and gas sector is powered.”
Initially the program will assess the suitability and demand for a local energy source at various locations. There will be detailed studies of wave resources, potential deployment methods and structural loading impacts, and of a “power matrix” to determine power demand and the device’s required size.
