SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy  Eni has formed a collaboration with Paris-based PASQAL, a specialist in neutral atoms quantum computing, to develop next-generation high-performance computing (HPC) solutions.

Quantum computing applies the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems said to be too complex for conventional computers.

PASCAL is applying a "full-stack" approach to develop quantum algorithms to enhance existing HPC workflows for a wide range of energy applications that Eni is researching, including for its upstream and renewable energy activities.

Eni operates what it claims is one of the world’s most powerful privately owned supercomputers at its Green Data Center in Ferrera Erbognone, Italy.

It is using computational methods for applications including numerical simulation of basins and reservoirs, magnetic fusion and renewable energies, and aims to use PASQAL’s algorithms to accelerate the research.

The R&D collaboration builds on Eni’s 2021 series A investment in PASQAL through its corporate venture capital vehicle Eni Next, which invests in potential high-growth startups to support the energy transition.

PASQAL has used the funding to manufacture its current 100 qubit commercial quantum computer and develop its next-generation systems.

The company, formed in 2019, builds quantum computers from ordered neutral atoms in 2D and 3D arrays.
