ABU DHABI -- Gulf Technical and Safety Training Centre (GTSC) has launched an operational training well at its Mussaffah, Abu Dhabi base, the first to be constructed in the Middle East.

The $1.5 million investment means delegates can now use the 1,700-ft (518-m) well to participate in training programs for drilling, completion, coiled tubing, and slickline services. The 62-ft (19-m) derrick, 52-ft (16-m) working platform, and 30-metric-ton (33-ton) hoisting device ensure conditions closely mirror the experience of working on a live rig, the company says.

The well is equipped with 7,000-gallon water tanks, pre-filling and high pressure pumps, and a 2-in. (5-cm) flowline and slickline unit. A fully air-conditioned classroom and workshop with a slickline unit control console have also been constructed.
