COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Shell has contracted Ramboll for decommissioning studies for its Brent Bravo and Delta platforms in the UK northern North Sea.

Ramboll will review remediation options for the gravity-based structures (GBSs) for these Condeep platforms, 185 km (115 mi) offshore Shetland. Both structures contain oil storage cells: materials left in these cells will have to be dealt with once production on Brent has ceased.

The Ramboll team will investigate all possible approaches including biological remediation, monitored natural attenuation, in-situ capping, and physical removal of any remaining sediments and oil. They will then evaluate ways of accessing the GBS storage cells, before delivering an overview of the most environmentally sound methods for Shell to focus on for further assessments.
