BRIXHAM, UK – ARC Marine has a grant from Innovate UK to build artificial habitats around offshore constructions.

According to the company’s CEO Tom Birbeck, targets are offshore platforms and wind farm developers.

The company uses hollow, stackable, LEGO-like reef cubes to protect seabed infrastructure, such as cables, while at the same time providing marine life in the area with a place to hide, sleep, hunt and breed.

Unlike concrete mattresses, the cubes are not classed as ‘marine litter’, ARC Marine added, so do not need to be recovered, adding to decommissioning costs.

The company is focusing on flat oyster reefs which are said to have declined by 85% globally and by 95% in Europe since 1890.
