SANDNES, NorwayVår Energi, the newly formed Norwegian independent, has raised its resource estimate for the Goliat field in license PL 229 in the Barents Sea following its latest exploration well.

The semisubmersibleWest Hercules spudded well 7122/7-7 S in late November in 379 m (1,243 ft) of water, 2 km (1.2 mi) south of the Goliat FPSO and 80 km (50 mi) northwest of Hammerfest, in the southern Hammerfest basin.

It was designed to investigate an untested fault compartment extending west from the field, the target being the Lower Jurassic/Upper Triassic reservoir sandstones of the Tubåen and Fruholmen formation.

The well, which was drilled to a subsurface vertical depth of 1,240 m (4,068 ft), encountered two levels of hydrocarbon-bearing sandstones in the Realgrunnen sub-group at original pressure, hydraulically separated from each other.

According to Vår, the accumulation, namedGoliat West is separated from the main Goliat field.

The Tubåen reservoir, which is roughly 10 m (33 ft), contains gas and oil with good-quality reservoir properties, with a likely total hydrocarbon column in the range of 18-60 m (59-197 ft).

The Lower Reservoir, which is oil-bearing, features several sandstone layers with good reservoir properties and a minimum hydrocarbon column of 35 m (115 ft).

Vår assesses recoverable resources at 4.4-13.8 MMboe, out of total in-place volumes of 13-44 MMMboe.

Prior to drilling, the company had already upgraded its resource estimate for Goliat from 176 MMbbl (on submission of the original development plan) to 198 MMbbl.

Denis Palermo, vice president Exploration, said the result was “a successful outcome of Vår Energi’s near-field exploration strategy, which will enable a fasttrack development of incremental reserves through a subsea tieback to the Goliat FPSO…”

Equinor is the company’s sole partner in the license.
