ZUG, Switzerland – Offshore preparatory works have started for pipelaying in the Bay of Greifswald of Germany for the Nord Stream 2 gas trunklines.

According to theNord Stream 2 AG consortium, five dredgers are presently working on the trench for the two pipeline strings.

Works are based on the planning approval for the construction and operation of the pipeline system in German territorial waters and at the landfall facilities, issued by the Stralsund Mining Authority in January.

Finland too has granted all necessary permits for construction and operation of the lines through its territorial waters and here offshore preparatory works are also under way.

National permitting procedures in the other three countries along the route – Russia, Sweden, and Denmark – are proceeding as planned, the consortium added, with further permits set to be issued in the coming months.

Nord Stream 2 will transport 55 bcm/yr of gas over 1,230 km (764 mi) from Russia westwards through the Baltic Sea to Germany, largely following the route and technical concept of the first twin Nord Stream pipeline system.
