LONDON – Italy’s regulatory authorities have approved Cabot Energy’s environmental impact assessment to drill an exploration well on the Vesta prospect, 50 km (31 mi) offshore Sicily in 120 m (393 ft) water depth.

Vesta is in the C.R.146 permit, with target reservoirs in the Liassic and deeper Triassic formations in the Streppenosa/Ragusa basin.

Cabot, which acquired 620 km (385 mi) of 2D seismic across the carbonates prospect in 2006, estimates a potential resource of 430 MMboe and sees analogies with the nearby Vega oil field that has to date produced 74 MMbbl.
