MOSCOW – South Stream Transport B.V. and Allseas Group have signed a contract to build the second string of the TurkStream gas pipeline’s offshore section.

The document, signed in Amsterdam, was as part of the option included in the contract for the pipeline’s first string, which had been inked in December 2016.

Allseas plans to continue using the Pioneering Spirit, as it did for the first string. Claimed to be the world’s largest construction vessel, it will lay more than 900 km (559 mi) of pipes across the seabed for the second string of the pipeline.

In October 2016, Gazprom received a survey permit fortwo strings of the gas pipeline’s offshore section in Turkey’s territorial waters in the Black Sea. The legal framework for the project was agreed upon by the governments of the Russian Federation and the Turkish Republic in the same month.

TurkStream is envisaged to be a transit-free export gas pipeline stretching across the Black Sea from Russia to Turkey and further to Turkey’s border with neighboring countries. The first string of the gas pipeline is intended for Turkish consumers, while the second string will deliver gas to southern and southeastern Europe. Each string of the pipeline will have the throughput capacity of 15.75 bcm of gas per year.

Gazprom subsidiary South Stream Transport is responsible for the construction of the offshore section.
