HOUSTON – Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company, has released its ONYX 360 rolling polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter. This unique technology enables a PDC cutter to rotate 360° while drilling, to improve drill bit durability in abrasive formations and to extend drill bit life and footage drilled per run.
Putting the entire diamond edge in the highest wear areas of the bit’s cutting surface distributes the wear over the full circumference to maintain the cutting edges longer. The rotation also reduces frictional heat buildup, Smith says.
