ABERDEEN, UKACE Winches has completed and delivered a winch package to Technip for use with subsea facilities related to the Loyal field west of Shetland.

BP’s Quad204 project involves redevelopment of the Schiehallion and Loyal fields, 175 km (109 mi) west of Shetland and 15 km (9.3 mi) north of the Foinaven field.

The operator commissioned anew, larger FPSO to replace the existing vessel and to accommodate new field tie-ins, with additional wells and installation of new subsea infrastructures on neighboring fields also planned.

ACE Winches developed its equipment in collaboration with the end client, taking into account the latter’s requirements for riser installation onboard the FPSO.

The package houses the hydraulic drum winch, with a safe working load of 150 metric tons across all layers, an overboard system and spooling gear in the winch base frame. It also includes closed loop hydraulic power units, located nearby.

A customized compact winch was designed to take into account deck space constraints and to meet required performance characteristics for riser installation, while the overboard system provides access to the tower, with ladders and walkways included.

All the equipment was fully tested at ACE Winches’ test bed facility, simulating full operational mode at full performance and brake load holds. All tests were performed to DNV specifications for lifting appliances.

The equipment will shortly be mobilized to the client.
