ABERDEEN, UK – Shell U.K. Ltd. (NYSE:RDS.A) has completed the first phase of its scheme to remove oil from the outer carrier pipe of the Gannet F flowline bundle in the UK North Sea. This follows a leak in 2011.

The recovery operation involved use of subsea pumps to direct oil into storage tanks on a recovery vessel. The oil was then taken onshore for disposal via a licensed waste oil contractor.

Shell has cooperated on this project with the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Marine Scotland, and the Health & Safety Executive.

The remediation process is expected to be completed next year with the removal of remaining oil from the flowline bundle.

Shell is reviewing future development of the Gannet field.
