ABERDEEN, UK -- Shell U.K (NYSE:RDS.A) has approval from Britain’s government to remove oil from the outer carrier pipe of the Gannet F flowline bundle in the UK North Sea. The equipment suffered a leak in August 2011.

The planned operation, in a water depth of 91 m (300 ft), is expected to recover the majority of the oil in the carrier pipe.

A secondary operation likely will be needed next spring due to limited availability of the recovery vessel and the sequence of oil recovery. During this second phase, the flowlines within the carrier pipe will also be flushed clean.

Shell is working with the Secretary of State’s representative, with support from DECC, the Health and Safety Executive, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and Marine Scotland.

The company says monitoring of the area around the Gannet field and the subsea flowline showsno further leakage.
