Kongsberg Maritime said April 2 that it will supply equipment for a new offshore support vessel ordered by DOF.

The 110-m-long vessel, which will accommodate 164 people, was designed by MMC Ship Design and is under construction at the CRIST shipyard in Gdynia, Poland. It will operate offshore Newfoundland and Labrador.

Kongsberg Maritime’s package includes the DC main switchboard, battery hybrid system, main power generator, thruster induction motor and distribution transformer.

The DC electric system, the company says, can provide enhanced energy efficiency, reduced space and weight, improved power quality, and better dynamic response, compared with conventional AC systems.

The battery-hybrid propulsion system will comprise two 1-MWh battery packs. These features combined should allow the vessel to deliver fuel savings of up to 35% compared to others, the company adds.

In addition, DOF has ordered Kongsberg Maritime technology to support its offshore operations, for navigation, automation and control systems, and the company’s K-Pos DP system.
