Island Offshore has contracted Fincantieri’s Norwegian subsidiary Vard to design and build a second hybrid-powered ocean energy construction vessel.
The new vessel, due to be delivered in early 2027, will be based on the VARD 3 25 design, developed in collaboration with Island Offshore to support wide-ranging underwater operations, including inspection, maintenance, repair, pipelaying, subsea infrastructure construction and dive support.
It will be 120 m long and 25 m wide, with a 250-ton offshore crane providing active heave compensation and accommodation for 130 personnel.
Other features include a 1.7 MWh energy storage system for hybrid propulsion, a heat recovery system for energy efficiency and provisions to run on low-emission alternative fuels.
Two launch and recovery systems (LARS) for ROV operations will be designed to work with a walk-to-work gangway, supporting cable laying and trenching at offshore wind farms.
Vard has already delivered 41 vessels to Island Offshore.
