STAVANGER, Norway -- Samsung has been awarded a contract to build an FPSO for the Skarv field in the Norwegian Sea.

The 292 m (958 ft) long, 50.6 m (166 ft) wide, 29 m (95 ft) deep vessel will weigh 40,600 metric tons (44,754 tons) and will accommodate up to 100 people in single cabins. Samsung should deliver the hull in 2010; the contract value is around $400 million.

Skarv was discovered in the Norwegian Sea in 1998, off the coast of Nordland. The field has estimated reserves of 470 MMboe and should remain in production for 25 years. Oil will be offloaded to tankers offshore, with gas sent through the Aasgard pipeline transportation system.
