ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands --Converteam is supplying an integrated power, propulsion, automation, and Class 2 dynamic positioning package for the MPU concrete hull heavy-lift vessel to be built at the Keppel Verolme shipyard in Rotterdam. Capacity is set for lift loads of 25,000-40,000 metric tons (27,558-44,092 tons).

The transformer-less power distribution equipment will include eight 1.65-MW thrusters motors controlled by Converteam's MV3000 drives. The company says this configuration will lower the overall cost of the power and propulsion system, and save weight, thus increasing the vessel's lifting capacity.

During the final approach to the platform, eight 2.3 MVA, 690 V alternators will provide power to the eight thrusters, allowing them to maintain the vessel's position while removing topsides loads in rough weather.
