PARIS -- Technip has contracted STX Heavy Industries (Korea) to construct a new pipelay vessel for delivery in 2010. The contract covers detailed design, construction, outfitting, and commissioning.

The vessel is designed at 194 m (636.5 ft) in length with two 2,800-ton (2,540-metric ton) reels and a top tension capacity of 450 tons (408 metric tons) to handle pipe to 18 in (45.7 cm) in diameter.

With a transit speed of 20 knots and accommodations for 140 crew, Technip says the vessel is designed to shorten transits and allow efficient deployment in any deepwater region.
